Who We Are
Floating Stairs Virginia is the dedicated Northern Virginia division of Capitol Iron Works, a DC-area fabrication operation with decades of structural ironwork history behind it. That history matters, because it shapes how we approach every staircase project we take on, from the first design conversation to the final installation walk-through.
We design, engineer, and fabricate in-house, drawing directly on the structural disciplines that Capitol Iron Works has developed across decades of commercial and institutional metalwork. When you commission a floating staircase through us, the design flows directly to the same fabrication floor that has been producing precision structural steel for the DC region for years.
Built From an Ironwork Legacy
Capitol Iron Works did not begin in the residential staircase niche. It began in structural ironwork, the kind of fabrication that holds buildings together rather than decorates them. Balustrades for federal buildings, structural steel for commercial interiors, custom metalwork for institutional projects across the DC metro region. The engineering disciplines built across those decades, understanding load distribution, material behavior under stress, the tolerances that separate a good weld from a structurally sound one, became the foundation that every floating staircase we design and build today is constructed on.
That evolution from heavy structural ironwork into architectural stair design was not accidental. As Northern Virginia''''s luxury residential market grew through the late 2000s and into the 2010s, the demand for staircases that performed at a commercial structural standard inside a residential setting became clear. Homeowners in McLean, Great Falls, and Arlington were building homes at a scale and ambition that the standard residential staircase trade simply could not serve. Capitol Iron Works was already operating at that structural level. The move into floating staircase design was a natural extension of what we had always done, applied to a market that was ready for it.
No Middlemen. No Outsourced Steel.
Most staircase companies in the Virginia market are assemblers. They source pre-cut steel components from a third-party manufacturer, finish them in-house or through another contractor, and install a product they did not fundamentally engineer or fabricate. That model works well enough for standard residential applications, but it introduces variation at every handoff point, and variation is the enemy of a floating staircase that needs to perform at a luxury finish level.
We operate differently. Our design team and our fabrication team work inside the same organization. When a staircase is designed and modeled in 3D BIM, the structural specifications flow directly to the Capitol Iron Works fabrication floor, where stringers are cut, welded, and finished from A36 structural steel to the exact dimensions the design requires. There is no translation loss between what was designed and what arrives on site. There is no third-party manufacturer interpreting our specifications through their own production constraints.
Every exposed hardware component is specified in 316-grade stainless steel. Every weld is produced to AISC standards. And because the fabrication is in-house, we can hold tolerances that an outsourced supply chain simply cannot guarantee consistently. That is not a marketing position. It is a structural and logistical reality that shows up in the finished product every single time.

Every staircase we install is deflection-checked at each individual cantilevered tread point during the engineering phase. Anchor alignment is held to a tolerance of 0.5mm across all critical connection points. Every project is delivered IBC compliant, with full structural documentation provided at handover.
